Opening Post and Initial Ideas

Today we learned that we would all be working on projects for display at the summer show. This could either be done individually or in groups, i chose to create a group with Tim and Patrick, the latter of whom gave us our idea for the next 10 or so weeks.

We will be creating a racing game (using the Unity engine) of some kind that will make use of a real steering wheel and pedal setup, with the idea being to emulate an arcade racer experience.

Pretty much everything around this basic concept is up in the air at the moment. We've been throwing around idea's for racing boats or even rickshaw's rather than cars. Other questions we've been considering are the visual style, as well as whether this idea will be too much for us, especially as no one has any significant skills in programming or knowledge of using Unity.

Because of this possibility we also brainstormed some potential backup ideas in case we decided that the racing game was too hard, we looked at on rails shooters like Time Crisis as well as a potential game using a dance mat for input. Whatever the backup idea will be, we've decided we want it to be similar to a game you would find in an arcade.

As for the style of our racing game we knew extreme realism was way beyond us so we looked at games like Capcoms 'Auto Modellista' (pictured above) which demonstrates a more stylised and potentially more achievable visual approach.

At this point i'm feeling like this may be too much for us, having looked at an in-game car set-up before, however there is plenty of support for Unity and i am optimistic that we may be able to find some scripts or a template of some kind that we can adapt to our needs, taking a tremendous amount of weight off our shoulders for this project.
